Shop Wine Cadario Mencia Verdejo Negra

2012

Cadario is a beautiful vineyard in the verdantly green landscape around the town of Tebongo, about 30 minutes drive down river from Cangas del Narcea. It's a vineyard that curls about the spurline of a mountain, giving it two distinct aspects. Mencia is planted along eastern facing side, while the south facing slope is planted to Verdejo Negro (Trousseau). Cadario is most northerly vineyard of the Urogallo collection and therefore the last ripening, the soils here are redder from iron content than those closer to the mountains, more clay than slate. It's also a vineyard that's dotted with fruit trees, cherries line the edge of the vineyard and wild strawberries pop up intermittently which give the entire area an idyllic feeling.

Wine-wise it's probably the most 'Northern Rhone' like cuvee that Nico, who spent so long in Crozes-Hermitage, makes here. There's a wild, bracken and under bush tone to it along with a black olive note. It's dark, powerful and intense but still full of lush black plum and damson.
