Retortoiro Verdejo Negra

Retortoiro is an old, single vineyard in the village of Tremao de Carballo, further upstream from Cangas del Narcea and higher into the mountains. It's south facing site mostly planted to Verdejo Negro, an old clone of Trousseau that came to Cangas with the Benedictine monks. Although there's at least another 11 varietals that make up almost 30% of the wine. The soils here are slate that's inter-shot with patches of anthracite. It's fermented in open top chestnut barrels before being transferred to used  French oak barrels for 18 months.
