Stunning expression of high altitude Garnacha
'Cantos del Diablo' like 'Las Uvas de la Ira' has been rebranded from the Daniel Landi label in 2019. It is a single vineyard planted in 1952 on very fine granite sands, at 950m absl and considered the ‘Grand Cru’ of San Vicente. The last surviving plot of what was once a large Paraje; it’s now just 0.35 hectares and produces less than 2,000 bottles annually
The grapes for the 2020 Cantos del Diablo were picked a little earlier to avoid the rains, and the wine has a paler colour than the 2021 I tasted next to it. It feels a little more reductive, and despite having very similar analytics, this is more about the palate with depth and length, while the 2021 is more aromatic and ethereal. This was vinified by Landi and is more in the Comando G style; the 2021 was vinified by Bareño, and the wine is more Fedellos. Different styles but similar (high) quality levels. 1,680 bottles and 40 magnums were filled in March 2022. 95+ points Luis Gutierez, The Wine Advocate, June 2023
