A new way for old Rioja...
Caminos de Santa Cruz, to give it it's full name, is an old Tempranillo vineyard perched on the edge of the Rivas de Tereso township at some 650m altitude. The top soil here is so thin that slabs of rock poke out from between the gnarled old bush vines. Only 1,000 bottles are produced from this plot each year.
The wine itself manages to mix the cool dark Atlantic fruit spectrum of Rioja Alvesa, blackberry, currant and dark cherry with a touch of Mediterranean bay and thyme. On the palate there's a gently dusty tannin framing a full throttle mineral core.
