A beautifully granitic introduction to the Albillo varietal.

Marañones' El Quiebro Albillo is an exciting new cuvee in the Marañones range. Now in it's first vintage, it's their new entry level Albillo sitting under the older vine, multi parcel blend 'Picarana.' But in years to come, Quiebro has the potential to rival some of the best whites produced in the Sierra de Gredos.

Quiebro comes from a single vineyard planted by Alvar de Dios and Fernando Garcia, above San Martin de Valdeiglesias at some 800m altitude. It's planted to various old clones of Albillo Real via massale selected cuttings taken from the Piesdescalzos vineyard. It's a site that has immense potential, altitude, exposure to the warming eastern influences, decomposed granite sand above a pure granite bed rock - despite only being planted in 2010 it's already producing mineral, layered and complex wine. It also marks a real turning point for Bodegas Marañones and the Sierra de Gredos more generally - this area that was once in disrepair, with more and more abandoned vineyards turning to forest every year - it's incredibly exciting to see new vineyards starting to be put back into the ground!

Slightly leaner at this stage than Picarana or Piesdescalzos, Quiebro balances a cool freshness with classic 'Abillo Real' glycerin texture, it's remarkably elegant, textured and complex.
